I found this really cool app on the gnome live power user tools page. the app is like a super fast search thingy to start applications or documents or find someone in your address book whom you want to mail. It's called launch-box.
I use ubuntu so installing it was done in only a few seconds. But for such a application to be useful you really need to bind it to a shortcut key. However i don't think GNOME lets you do that yet in a easy gnome way, but it is possible.
You just open gconf-editor and search for Metacity (/apps/metacity/) there you have a few subs, the ones you need are "keybinding_commands" and "global_keybindings". In "keybinding_commands" choose a "command_X" to put the command in.
Then in "global_keybindings" find the "run_command_X" (where X is the chosen number) and input your keybinding as value. I use Super_L since that key din't have any previous use anyway.
